Contradelphia is a youth-run contra dance series in Center City, Philadelphia. It takes place at the Christ Church Neighborhood house, within easy access of public transportation. The series includes gender-neutral calling, occasional fusion and techno contras, and blues dancing during the break. It is a welcome environment for new and experienced dancers alike.
The next dance for Contradelphia will be scheduled in the fall after some maintenance is performed by our venue, and it is expected to run once a month. Below find the details of our most recent dance, and stay tuned for updates!
Contradelphia’s next dance is Monday, June 8th, and the rumors are true – it’s a Fusion Contra.
Caller: Rick Mohr
Music: Fusion Tracks by Kristen Watts, Bryan Suchenski, and YOU?!
Time: Beginner’s Lesson at 7:30, Dance at 8:00
Admission: $10, $5 for students & volunteers (more extensive volunteers free)
What is fusion contra exactly? What a wonderful question mystery person. We are defining it to be a merger of many different styles of music, non traditional to contra dance, and contra dancing to it! It’s similar to a techno contra in that it will be pre-recorded music, but not all be techno or pop techno music.
So that song that you heard on the radio that’s got a pretty slick groove to it? Yeah. you could be contra dancing to it Monday, June 8th.
Fusion sets are prepared by Kristen Watts, Bryan Suchenski, and YOU (if you’re up for the challenge)! If you have suggestions or want to try your hand at creating a set, talk to us about what you need (you can get Audacity for free, so you just need some inspiration and time to mix).
Hope to see you all at Christ Church Neighborhood House on Monday June 8th at 8 pm for some groovy dancing times!
All ages and experience levels welcome!
No partner or experience needed, just show up.
Bring a snack to share at the break! I mean, assuming you like snacks.
If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact Kate Waggoner.
